The Gift of Giving

Heaven’s Example

What example of giving has God given to the world?

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16.

What did Christ do to redeem us?

“Who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present age, according to the will of our God and Father.” Galatians 1:4. (See also Titus 2:14; 1 Timothy 2:6.)

Why did He lay aside His riches and become poor?

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes be became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.”

2 Corinthians 8:9.

Abraham’s Charge and Test

After Abraham was blessed, what was he to be?

“I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” Genesis 12:2.

What tested Abraham’s faith and devotion?

“By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promise was about to sacrifice his one and only son.” Hebrews 11:17.

The More Blessed Way

As Christ sent His disciples out to preach, to heal the sick, and to raise the dead, what did he say to them?

“Freely you have received, freely give.” Matthew 10:8.

Why does God comfort us in our trouble?

‘Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we may comfort those in trouble with the comfort we ourselves received from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:4.

Note – All who accept the gospel take upon themselves the obligation to pass its blessings on to others. In this way the work of salvation is extended. God expects every soul reclaimed from sin to join in the same work for others that lifted him up and placed his feet upon the Rock. The good things of God are not to be selfishly kept to ourselves. We receive to give. Says Whittier, “The soul is lost that’s saved alone.” And as love prompted God’s great gift, so His love in our hearts will prompt us to give, to minister, and to engage in loving service for the welfare and the happiness of others.”

In His ministry what did Christ say of the blessedness of giving?

“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the word the Lord Jesus said: It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Acts 20:35.

Note - The government of God is founded on the principle of benevolence, or the desire to bless others. Our richest blessing come as a result of the good things we have passed on to our fellowmen.

After being anointed by the Holy Spirit, what did Jesus do?

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went about doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.” Acts 10:38.
