The Communion Service
Lesson 25
Marking Code: C
Marking Color: Black
Key Text: 1 Corinthians 11: 23-30
- 1
Corinthians 11:23-30. The
bread and wine of the
Communion service commemorate
the great sacrifice of
Jesus-His life of obedience
and His death on the cross as
an unblemished sacrifice for
our sins. By celebrating the
Lords Supper, we keep
in mind His death and perfect
atonement until He comes
again.
Matthew 26:26-30.
Luke 22: 14-20.
Note: Paul
makes several points regarding the
Lords Supper-or communion. He
says:
All who believe may
eat the bread and drink the wine.
Spiritual preparation
of the heart is necessary before
taking part.
The Lords Supper
looks backward to Jesus sacrifice and
forward to the great marriage supper
of the Lamb of heaven.
No set time is
specified; some churches celebrate
the Lords Supper each
quarter-four times per year.
- 1
Corinthians 5: 7,8.
Leaven (yeast) and
fermentation are symbols of
sin and decay. Therefore, the
bread used in the Communion
service should be unleavened
bread, and the wine should
not be fermented wine, but
the pure juice of the grape.
Only such symbols can
accurately represent the
perfect, unblemished
sacrifice of Jesus.
1 Peter 1:19; 2:22.
- Hebrews 10:
10-14. Christ died once
as a complete sufficient
sacrifice. It isnt
necessary to repeat His
sacrifice over and over again
as it is believed happens in
the service of the mass.
Communion is a symbolic
remembrance of Jesus
sacrifice for us.
- John 13:
1-17. Jesus also
instituted the service of
foot washing as a preparation
for the Lords Supper.
Note: The foot
washing service is important
preparation for the Lords
Supper because of:
Christs command
John 13:14.
Christs example
John 13:15.
Christs promised
blessing. John 13:17.
- Luke 22: 16,
18. The Communion service
looks forward to the marriage
supper of the Lamb, which we
will eat together with Jesus
in heaven.
Luke 12:37.
C-End.
